Go Big or Go Home: Part 1 of 12

The idea for the Six Flags Road Trip was born in the Spring of 2016. It was just another night at the dinner table. Dylan’s 8th grade graduation was coming up, which led to discussion about high school, which led to discussion about high school graduation celebrations.

I had attended a small, private Christian high school and enjoyed a senior class trip to France. Rob had the opportunity to go to Disney Grad Night. The kids pondered over our experiences and began brainstorming ideas for Dylan’s high school graduation celebration. They knew his high school graduation would be a huge milestone for him and their excitement to help plan how he’d celebrate meant the world to us.

Dylan’s middle school days had been tough. Puberty is no joke for a typical developing kid, let alone one with Down syndrome. He had always enjoyed theme parks and Rob had the brilliant idea of purchasing the month-to-month membership with Six Flags. It was affordable and Six Flags Vallejo was barely an hour away form our home. Dylan has always been a deal maker and the agreement was made: have great days at school, earn trips to Six Flags Vallejo! By the time he graduated from middle school, he and his dad new the Vallejo Park inside out! We’d even hit Magic Mountain a few times!

The idea for his high school graduation celebration was born - a Six Flags Road Trip!

The goal - visit ALL the Six Flags Parks in the continental United States! Go big or go home, right?!

Fast forward too 2019 and Rob had the road trip completely mapped out. Reservations were made. Airline tickets purchased. Car rental solidified. GoPro purchased. Website and social media created. T-shirts designed. List of odds and ends find tuned.

& then COVID

The trip was cancelled. Dylan was devastated. We took a deep breath and pushed through, constantly reminding him that when the world was feeling better, the trip would be rescheduled.

2021 arrived and there was just too much uncertainty. Vaccine requirements. Masking. Park reservations. Different COVID protocols between states. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Summer 2022 would be the summer of the Six Flags Road Trip.

The trip was planned for a 2nd time. The excitement surrounding this trip was massive - it was now SIX years in the making!

Six Flags Kick Off was hosted on Sunday, June 26th, at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Vallejo. It was a beautiful day, filled with riding coasters and watching shows with family and friends. On Tuesday, June 28th, we hit the road and officially got on the road.

Our next stop: Frontier City in Oklahoma City
